Best Shot Monday

no words are really necessary here. (except that it was taken by Dave, yay!)
... at Krispy Kreme, one of our new family traditions (b-fast at KK at Christmastime). it's fairly obvious that Lucy thought it was scrumdiddlyumptious!
mmm, Christmas Eve. will there be other Best Shot Mondays out there?

excited eli

here's eli dancing in daddy's lap as dave practices puppetry with a couple of youth groupers. it's just a slice of everyday-ness 'round here. (btw, they're practicing to a version of a boy band song. don't ask why!) ** actually, i just remembered: i'm also puppet-ing with one hand while videoing eli's reaction. that's why he's looking at me with all that glee. the students were taking a break.

for G & G

Sorry about the "Bourne-ness" of it (those movies are all shaky & jaggedy); she's still pretty stinkin' cute! And yes, I know "fishies" don't talk. Unless you're in Finding Nemo. :)

Best Shot Monday - take your pick

eli is starting to be very playful. i planted him in the middle of our big red couch, and he sat there pretty happily for a long time. lucy joined him, of course, reading her books and helping him keep track of the toys on his lap. it is easy to make eli laugh and smile.

as i left a friend's house on thursday morning, i noticed how the fog was just sitting on the nearby mountains, making a compelling backdrop to the rooftops of the neighborhood. i thought immediately of a great carl sandburg poem (or was it langston hughes?) about fog & "little cat's feet".

and for laughs: this happened about 7 times this week. i put it in black & white to help you keep down your breakfast. :) oh, eli. we'll never have clothes for hand-me-downs at this rate!
what did your week look like?

Eli's 5-Month Picture

it just doesn't get much cuter than that! and yes, it is 75 degrees here today. we're walking in a winter wonderland, alabama style!
chart eli's progress:
1 month old
2 months old
3 months old
4 months old
not to be left out, lucy also had to pose with today's date. (in a few years, when she looks at this picture, she'll realize what a fine idea pants are.) she'll be 22 months old (officially) tomorrow. holy cow! and for posterity, here's what she looked like at 5 months.

Lucy's really cute too!

i got an e-mail request from a loyal reader to post a new pic of lucy (eli's been getting all the publicity lately!). so here's the latest. we were out Christmas shopping last week, and we hit a toy store. oh my goodness, she jumped at the chance to push this stroller around. and she took off throughout the store like there was no tomorrow. then she'd come to the stuffed animals, throw out the "used" one mercilessly onto the floor, and tenderly put in a new one for the next lap. it broke our hearts not to get this for her right then and there. we'll see what the extended family comes up with for her for Christmas! ;)
and cute story to add: lucy loves baths. i've mentioned it before. baths fall under dave's "tasks" in our home. i've never even given eli one bath. dave loves giving them baths, and he's good at it. anyway, last friday, dave said, "lucy, are you ready for your bath?", and she ran to the bathroom in record time. (i think that would be a yes.) i stood in the doorway watching them prepare everything (dave, getting the appropriate water temp, lucy throwing the toys in one by one), and lucy came to the door, said, "bye mommy!" and closed it on me! it was the funniest thing. mommy doesn't give me baths so her presence isn't warranted!

Best Shot Monday

join the fun and post your best shot here!

this is my eli (below), playing in his hop & pop (another toy that keeps him busy). he just loves the chance to exercise those strong legs of his by jumping up & down. he also likes to spin the little plastic rings (above).

he is getting too big for his first "bed" (a travel crib/pack & play). when he shifts in his sleep, he wakes up very easily now. it's time for him to get into a crib. the search is on for a loaner. (lucy is still in her crib and will be for awhile longer). we're going to start using our normal-sized pack & play for eli in the meantime. anyway, his frequent waking up has been a little stressful for us. last night, he was up at 3:15, 4:10, and 5:30! (you're killing me, smalls!)

but i'm mentioning this for posterity: during one of those times, as he was resting in my arms and drifting back to sleep, he kept giving me those dreamy, heavenly smiles. then he'd open his eyes halfway and look at me. i'd smile at him. he'd smile back, and drift back into dreaming. even though i was so tired, those little smiles made it all okay.

i adore my son.

Thursday's Theme: Cozy

so it's been something of an Eli-themed week (in pictures). the theme at Tracey's is "cozy", and that made me think of his super soft comfy cozy jammies. here he is, just about crashed out, cozied up with his "best friend".

the very same toy Eli had by his side just days after he was born.

that's some size difference, eh?

see what makes others cozy here!

Best Shot Monday

Dave set up the walker for Eli this weekend.
At first, Eli seemed to enjoy it.
A few seconds later, not so much.

Methinks he's just a tad melodramatic, like his momma. He was happy again right after that.

See what's making others scream over at Picture This!

Christmas photo - runner up

This is the runner-up family Christmas photo for us this year... it was too cute not to show it to you here.

fall foliage, so pretty!

i'd been wanting to do two things lately: get pictures of the kids out in the yard with all the beautiful leaves everywhere, and have a family picture taken for our Christmas card this year. i'm so glad we got out and did those things yesterday, because it was warm, it was sunny, and after we did the picture-taking, all the leaves continued to fall right off the branches. today, they're mostly on the ground, and today, it's raining and pretty dreary. so, yay! i will unveil the aforementioned family Christmas photo at a later time, but to whet your appetite, here are some beauts from both my camera and my parents'.
my dave, what a monkey!

playing in the leaves was fun for lucy!

she also liked hanging out by the tree

we had a fun early thanksgiving celebration with my parents yesterday. in addition to all the good food, we had a hilarious poker night for hours. they left this morning. now that they're gone and the convention (see below) is over, it seems really mellow 'round here. i think i'll bake some cookies and watch tv.

NaBloPoMo Day 13 - creatively stalled edition

I'm truly at a loss for words, and I don't have that much time to write something thoughtful or creative today anyway. Lots to do!
Here's a picture of me in 7th grade (13 years old). My hair is still that long now!
Gotta run. Laundry, cleaning, time with God, the kids - they're all waiting for me. Peace!

You are so good to me, You heal my broken heart... (Waterdeep)

this is my "wild self" from the "Build Your Wild Self" site. i saw this on Mother Bunny's blog and couldn't resist. there are all kinds of things you can choose to create your "wild self", and i opted to go for a regular, human likeness. yes, i'm safe that way. what will you create? it's easy and free!

today, i'm thankful for

* cool fall weather and leaves changing their color

* having dinner with Mark, Leigh Ann, & Caleb on Friday night

* having breakfast with Rebecca, Linda, & Lily on Saturday morning

* a nice phone conversation with my mom Saturday afternoon

* time to sleep in this morning (babies & me all slept till 8:30!! we missed church, but that is okay. it was worth it to get those extra hours)

* Leigh Ann and Caleb popping in for another visit this morning

these things and more made my weekend very easy to get through... dave went on the high school retreat Friday afternoon and i stayed home with the kids. that was tough, but the folks 'round these parts are starting to care for me in very tangible ways! he gets home within the hour. i can't wait to see him again!!

Eli's 4-Month Picture

yeah, here he is, four months already! my eli has so much charm. he smiles at everyone, laughs, and makes little squealing sounds. he's about 15 pounds. frankly, i think he's a really easy baby to take care of. we have fun. he's my special guy.
and here he is rolling over! this kid is on the move.

Thursday's Theme: Memory

For this week's theme, I decided to dig up a memory that wasn't attached to my children. I have fond memories of a trip Dave & I made between Christmas & New Year's in 2001. We went with 3 other friends to Split, Croatia (above, photo not mine, but I was sooooooo there!!). We traveled there from Budapest, HU by train. It was a long, long night on that old train!

At this point, Dave and I had only been together for about 4 months, and we were still getting used to one another. Our relationship was frought with long-distance woes, out-of-sight, out-of-mind miscommunications, and the usual twists & turns that two people face when they learn more and more about one another. I didn't quite know at this point if he was "the one", but I did know that I loved him. This trip was a great time of growth for us, I remember that. We had lots of good long talks as we explored the beautiful country of Croatia.

But back to the pictures. One sunny, chilly afternoon, we five friends decided to take several posed pictures amid the awesome backdrops we saw everywhere. We started posing for each picture like it was a record album cover. This one is my favorite. That's me in the foreground, feeling very sassy in my shades. And that's my Dave in the background. Steve & Danielle are in the middle. Neal took the picture. He is a very talented guy; I find myself modeling a lot of my photography after his.

One afternoon, we shopped in a cool outdoor market and had a picnic lunch overlooking the Adriatic. It was a great day (December 2001). See the full-sized version of this picture here (taken by Neal's camera on self-timer).

What other memories will you discover over at Theme Thursday? Check 'em out!

TAR starts tonight!

We received this Bumbo baby seat from Matt & Gina after Eli was born, and he is just now getting old enough to use it. But it's taking some time to get him interested in it. (It's the only thing he sits in that encourages him to sit up completely straight, which is a new idea for him.) Right now, he enjoys it for a few short minutes before getting upset and arching his back to get out. I hope he'll grow to enjoy it more & more as he gets bigger, because I'm told it's a lifesaver! Dave put it on his head last night and that was the funniest thing I've ever seen, so it's certainly meeting a need for me at the moment!

I didn't remember to change our clocks last night before going to bed (thankfully, Dave remembered to do our alarm clock). So when I woke up in the middle of the night to check on Eli, it occurred to me. And it was the BEST feeling to know that I could have an extra hour to enjoy! Yay for falling back! It'll be strange to see it get dark earlier tonight.

The colors are changing on the trees here in H-ville. It is gorgeous. Everywhere you look, more red & orange & yellow. It's lovely here in the fall. I love November. It's the beginning of sweatshirt weather, which means everyone will see me in my Harvard hoodie more often than they probably care to. :) Sweatshirts & jeans, my favorite outfit ever. Plus, I'm back in one of my pre-pregnancy pairs of jeans! Whoo-hoo!! We have a busy month ahead: my brother in law is coming to visit this week, and the high school retreat this weekend (the whole fam is going, yikes! I'm going to be very harried!) and then Dave & I (and Eli) are going to Atlanta the weekend after that for our fifth go-round at the Nat'l Youth Workers' Convention. We are totally stoked. I'm sure I'll be mentioning it more as the month zooms on. Lucy is going to have great two-on-one care as Gramma & Grampa are coming to look after her. After that, Thanksgiving is upon us, and the joys of the Christmas season right around the corner!

Fun fact: Anytime Lucy sees a body of water, she gets all excited and shouts, "BATH!?" because she loves taking baths. Like when we went to the lake, she saw the lake and thought we'd bathe her in it. So last night, she sees 10 seconds of Cast Away on tv, you know, where Tom Hanks is stranded on a deserted island, and she points to the water and says, "Bath?" It's one of many words we now have to spell, because baths are like her favorite thing in the world, and she'd seriously take one ten times a day if we let her.

I don't know how I'm going to post anything for NaBloPoMo on Saturday. I won't have access to a computer. At least at the 'vention, there's a digital lounge where I'll attempt to log on for five minutes or so each day.

As you can see, Lucy likes her brother's Bumbo just fine. Thatta girl!

Oh, just so you know, I put up a new album of pics, so all you Goose & E-ster fans check it out!

More tomorrow!

Thursday's Theme: Mama

Tracey (at Picture This) is judging a new photo contest in November; the theme is "Mama", and the submission should feature the mom (me) or the mood of motherhood prominently. Children can be in the picture as well, but they are not to be the focus. I have selected a couple of pics that I'm considering for submission and they're below.

(taken by my mom on her last visit)

(taken by Dave the day Eli was born)

I like the first one because this is something Eli and I do a million times a day. That boy makes eye contact with me that is so strong and endearing. Everyone who sees us together makes some kind of comment about how he "only has eyes for me" or "he is in love with his mama".

The second is one of my all-time favorites, because it captures the perfect peace and joy I felt after our son was born. I love how neither of us are looking at the camera (or each other), and I love the magnetism of our new relationship. I can't say that I remember Dave even taking that picture. It's a little blurry, but I think that adds to its charm.

But to celebrate the theme of "mama", here is one my dad took of me and my mom. She is amazing. I love you!

Check out other mamas at Tracey's!

Thursday's Theme: Glow

(In these photos, you'll see a jubilant Dave after a successful interview weekend, the sign for our new church home, and shots of Lucy at the Oakleys' house (she is being held by Shelton, watching Hal at the grill).

When we went to Huntsville, Alabama on Memorial Day weekend, we were going for an interview weekend. And strangely enough, it was really, really relaxing. Maybe because we've been "stuck" in our current small town with no money for travel for a long time. We relished the opportunity to hit the road and see someplace new. But we were blessed beyond just having an opportunity to "get away". Huntsville is beautiful. We had a great time of fellowship with everyone we met from Covenant Presbyterian Church. We stayed at the pastor's house and had a great time of conversation each night over dinner with his family. It was just plain nice. God's hand was clearly in it. Dave is headed back there for the next couple of days to do some househunting for us. We are scheduled to move there on July 31. I'll keep you posted about our new place.

so here's what i've been doing...
